Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer’s Jokes-“ Maharajapuram Humour”
In a concert Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer did not give the boy mridangist (in his teens) an opportunity to play his ‘solo’ and delaying it
The boy’s father slowly came upto Viswanatha Iyer to remind about the same. Viswanatha Iyer quipped
1st Joke
“ ITHANAI NAZHI “THANI YAGATHANE VASITHAAN” . “ENPATTUKU ENGE VASITHAAN”?
"AVAN PATTUKKU THANE VASITHAAN”
Meaning that he was so far playing only his solo versions without joining the team and without any participation in the songs.
2nd Joke
Viswanatha Iyer was presiding over a felicitation function for Dr.Balamuralikrishna . Dr.Balamauaralikrishna’s disciple was asked to sing for 1 hour before the function”. Viswanatha Iyer patiently sat thro the concert. The boy after prostrating before Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer introduced himself and told Viswanatha Iyer that he was the one who sang “Sunadha Vinodhini” before the function. To which replied Viswanatha Iyer, Yes, I have heard your Guru sing Sunadha Vinodhini . It was “Sunaadam” , yours was “Vinodam”.
3rd Joke
One physician- rasika came upto Viswanatha Iyer and asked him about varnams. He was very much upset with none (even great musicians like Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer) coming forward to compose a varnam in raga “Harikhambhodhi”, to which Viswanatha Iyer replied “You find a suitable medicine for cancer before which time I will compose a Varnam in “Harikambhodhi” and keep it ready”.
4th joke
A sishya of Viswanatha iyer was singing in a marriage concert, where Viswanatha iyer was present. The sishya sang “Poorvikalyani” and came upto neraval “Mathurapuri Nilaye Mani Valaye” in the song “Meenakshimemudam” and did not budge an inch from the lines “Mani Valaye”. Viswanatha iyer read him correctly and asked the bride’s father to pay the agreed sum instantly so that he may proceed further in the concert.
“MANI VALAYE” – MEANING THAT “THE MONEY HAS NOT COME”
